BETTER NAME & BOUTIQUE

Not all couture has a famous designer name. If you’re looking for a bargain, watch out for undervalued creations by the custom shops of high-end department stores, smaller boutiques, and better manufacturers. This category makes up the mid- to higher range of vintage and includes a broad cross-section with more than one tier. Compared to budget wear, this type of vintage shows better quality and was usually (but not always) smarter in design. You can recognize these pieces by their superior workmanship and beautiful fabrics. They were more costly and exclusive in their day, and they still hold their value in ours.

Most major American and European cities had a handful of couture-level dressmaking houses. Before each new season, their wealthy clientele would visit the salons and place orders for garments created to their specifications. The construction and materials were exquisite, on par with those used by well-known designers. Today the names of these houses and their designers are mostly forgotten and examples are not so common, but if you do find them, the clothing is usually modestly priced and of high quality.
